Postpartum
The postpartum period begins immediately following delivery of the placenta and lasts through the process of the uterus returning to it's non-pregnant state.
Classically, a mom who's just given birth may feel a sudden surge of energy. The first hour after giving birth is a chemically sensitive time for families to fall-in-love. People present at a baby's birth and able to hold baby during the sensitive first hour postpartum may bond with baby. A mom who's just given birth may be actively touching baby; exploring baby, and establishing breastfeeding with her newborn baby. Breast feeding immediately after birthing aids the process of involution; assists in keeping the uterus contracted; helps control postpartum bleeding and helps involution of the uterus. Involution is the process of the uterus returning to its non-pregnant state. Lochia Lochia is discharged during the first two weeks after giving birth. Normal lochia changes: Lochia rubra (red) 1 to 4 days Lochia serosa (pink) 5 to 9 days Lochia alba (white) 10 to 15 days. Physical Changes It took nine months to grow your baby! Expect nine months to one year for your body to return to your non-pregnant tone! Breast-fed is best fed! Avoid dieting to loose weight while breastfeeding! Toxins stored in your body fat may be released in your milk. Breast feeding burns calories! Mothers who breast feed their babies tend to loose pregnancy weight better than bottle feeding moms! Expect to loose weight slower and safer while breastfeeding than rapid weight loss! Postpartum Emotions Many women experience emotional ups and downs, commonly called "baby blues." Hormonal changes, especially with lactation, are associated with "baby blues." Contact your doctor or midwife if you feel you need help with dealing with postpartum "baby blues" or if you suspect postpartum depression. Don't isolate yourself! Talk to somebody! Hire a Postpartum Companion Better yet, hire a Comprehensive Labor Companion during pregnancy who will be there during birthing and postpartum as well. |
